Managing Diabetes – How to Lead a Normal Life in the Society

Life after the Diagnosis of Diabetes

Diabetes is a lifelong disease without the possibility of complete cure.  But you can control diabetes with medicines and lifestyle changes that will enable you to lead a normal life in the society. Managing diabetes becomes stress-free once you take a systematic approach to medicines, dietary restrictions, regular physical activity and blood glucose monitoring is established.

Controlling diabetes is often a lifetime task that requires a combination of personal determination, medical assistance, friends and family, support groups. People with type 2 diabetes have become resistant to insulin.  The goal of type 2 diabetes treatment is to regain control over blood glucose levels, and then maintain that control long-term to prevent complications.

Diabetes management has come a long way in recent years and diabetes has become more manageable.  Watch a video by InternationalSweeteners Association - A story about Living with Diabetes:

3 Factors of Managing Diabetes

1     1) Food: Diet should be changed as per the advice of the physician.  Modify your food habits to control blood sugar levels as well as other existing or potential health conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.   For this some care should be taken to choose right kind of foods:
  •         Consult with a nutritionist who will plan your diet after discussing the stage of your disease.
  •          Try to understand the right amount of carbohydrates in the foods we eat.
  •         Carbohydrates, fats and s salt intake should be reduced.

2     2)  Regular Exercise: You should do exercises for 30 to 60 minutes daily.  Do these exercises one to three hours after meals.  It is advisable to eat a small snack before exercising if glucose level is below 90mg/dL.  Practicing yoga is one of the best exercises for diabetic cure.  Learn to practice yoga in your home itself by taking lessons from Brilliant Yoga.

      3) Monitoring Blood Glucose Level: Checking the blood glucose level regularly is more important to know the status of your disease.  Regular eye check up also should be done.  Check your feet often because diabetic foot damage is serious complication.

You should get support from the family and society.  Finding support is an important factor because this support will give you the feeling that you are not alone is great.  Finding support in family itself will help you a lot.
The essentials of daily diabetes care include monitoring blood sugar levels carefully, watching what you eat, getting enough exercise, and sticking to any prescribed medication. Doing exercises in the company of your family members will be more enjoyable than doing it alone.  Selecting the right type of foods also needs some help from others.

In most cases, the marriage partner (husband or wife) is the best person who can give us enough support.  Be a member of some community in your place with similar minded persons where you can share your ideas and concern about the disease and the ways to manage.

For the maintenance of healthy blood sugar level, herbal supplement will become useful than taking conventional medicines for a long period.  Long term use of medicines will affect the health of your eyes and heart, so using herbal supplements, these side effects can be avoided.
