Diabetes
Overview
Diabetes is a lifelong disease which
has no practical cure. Controlling the blood
sugar levels and reducing the side effects of the disease are the ways to lead
a normal life for a diabetic patient. Studies
show that the life span of a diabetic patient will be lowered by 10 to 15 years
when compared to the people, who are not diabetic.
Variability in blood sugar level is
common in diabetic patients and this abnormality leads to many other physical
complications such as heart problems, high blood pressure, low eye sight, low
libido etc. Diabetic patients can lead a
normal life if they are willing to make changes in their diet and doing regular
exercises along with taking the prescribed medicines.
Early detection of the disease and the
strict control of sugar levels are very necessary for reducing the ill effects
of the disease. Most of the
diabetic patients are not aware about
the attack of the disease. They will
only become aware about the diabetic attack, when they are directed to do blood
analysis in connection with some other disease or purpose; this makes it is
difficult to start the treatment in the initial stage itself.
High
Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is closely
associated with the diabetes normally.
More than 60% of the diabetic patients are having high blood
pressure. The presence of excess of
blood sugar or the frequent rise and fall of blood sugar levels will cause
disorders in different nerves and veins.
High blood pressure is more common in type 2 diabetic patients. Blood pressure ranges are:
• Normal: Less than 120 over 80 (120/80)
• Stage 1 high blood pressure: 140-159 over 90-99
• Stage 2 high blood pressure: 160 and above over 100 and above
• Stage 1 high blood pressure: 140-159 over 90-99
• Stage 2 high blood pressure: 160 and above over 100 and above
High blood pressure means a person is
having a reading higher than 140/90 repeatedly.
So periodic checking for high blood pressure is advised for diabetic patients. Type 2 diabetes have more chances of having
high blood pressure due to the high amounts of insulin in their blood. For the diabetic patients, who are obese and
inactive, the chances are very high. High
blood pressure often has no signs or symptoms; that is why it is called 'silent
killer'. So every diabetic patient
should check their blood pressure also along the checking of blood sugar
levels.
