Obesity, or excess body fat, is usually caused by consuming too much energy rich food while doing too little exercise to burn off unneeded calories. Obesity is associated with many illnesses and is directly related to a shorter life expectancy. Being obese is a clinical condition with serious health implications and it is not a matter of simply being fat or overweight.
Obesity StatisticsThe World Health Organization predicts that worldwide in 2015, approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight, and in excess of 700 million people will be obese. Obesity can have serious health effects and increase the risk of life-threatening diseases.
Effects of Obesity on Health
Obesity first leads to de-conditioning because it is harder to get up and walk or exercise. There is a strong correlation between belly fat and incidence of Diabetes Mellitus or Type II Adult Onset Diabetes, but with diet and exercise Type II can be reversed at this stage. If Diabetes continues untreated, it can lead to kidney failure, limb amputation etc. There are serious health implications associated with being obese and the condition is known to shorten life expectancy. While obesity is linked to many health issues, the rising numbers of those diagnosed with diabetes indicate the connection between excess body fat and how the body is able to utilize its main source of fuel, glucose. The studies show that fat cells release a protein called pigment epithelium-derived factor (PEDF). It is found that the release of this protein leads to the development of type 2 diabetes. Insulin causes cells to take up glucose in the bloodstream, store it and convert it to energy for the body. When the cells resist insulin due to excess fat, more insulin is then produced by the pancreas to counteract the negative effects, thereby overworking the pancreas and eventually slowing and stopping insulin.
When we eat, the pancreas releases insulin, which sits on receptors in the cells, allowing blood sugar to enter the cells for use in energy production. Diabetes mellitus is a condition where the cells are unable to use insulin to convert sugar into energy, so the sugar remains in the blood stream. Type 1 diabetes is not linked to obesity and occurs when the islet cells in the pancreas stop producing insulin. Gestational diabetes is linked to hormonal changes during pregnancy and type 2 diabetes is linked to obesity.

At this point the body can no longer produce enough insulin to balance out blood sugar. Many recent studies have shown a direct link between obesity and the diagnosis of type II diabetes, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes. Ninety percent of diabetics are diagnosed with type II diabetes. A body mass index (BMI) of over 40 has been linked to a higher chance of developing diabetes.
Like obesity, type 2 diabetes is highly preventable. For those suffering from obesity and diabetes, just 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week can be very useful in starting the weight loss process. Studies have shown that with weight loss, one can reduce the amount of medication required to control diabetes, and some can completely control the disease with diet and a healthy lifestyle. Diabetes once diagnosed, required lifelong treatment; so to natural methods are more helpful for the treatment to save money and to avoid side effects such as heart disorders, loss of eye vision etc.
